If you know anything about the marketing industry at all, then you definitely heard the term SEO, or Search Engine Optimization before. This is a new method of marketing in which the use of keywords and phrases within online content can help navigate a user to a company site. The content is usually based on the product or service that a user has typed into a search engine. Through search engine rankings, a companies site can reach the top results pages if they put enough work into it.
When it comes to rankings, a businesses goal should be to reach the top of Google rankings, because it is no secret that they are purely dominant across the internet, and among the other search services similar to them. If you are lucky enough to make it to the top of the search results pages, gaining a new customer, or at least getting your name out there is looking good. Studies have shown that three quarters of internet search engine users will never scroll past the first page of results.
Search engines also provide organic links to users, which is good to know as a company, because between 70 and 80 percent of users claim that they will not even acknowledge a sponsored result, such as the annoying ads and popups, but almost always will click on one of the top ranking organic results provided through the search engine. They say that almost half of users, somewhere around 42 percent, of internet search users will click on one of the overall top ranking organic links to find what they are looking for.
Now that search engine rankings have established their importance, it is time to look ahead, and think about the future. Companies need to assure their customers easy findings and navigation of their sites, but not only on desktop and laptops, but for other new devices in technology as well. As of 2012 over 70 million users shop using a mobile device such as a cellphone or tablet computer, so it is evident that companies need to put more focus into their other interfaces for their users. But by 2014, companies should put almost all of their focus into the other interfaces, because predictions show that internet usage among smartphones and tablets will completely overtake desktop computer and laptops.
